Ethical Decision Making For the Ethical Officer and Leader

One of the greatest challenges in the public and private sectors is the supposed conflict between efficiency and ethics. This has been a topic of discussion even during the times of Socrates and yet is still a real issue today. Look at the many individuals, from all positions of life that learned this lesson the hard way, for ethics does matter. This course addresses what it takes to be an ethical officer and/or leader and how important ethics is at all levels of the organization, but critical at the top. Real life case studies will be used to address ethical dilemmas and special ethical issues of police discretion, use of force, racial profiling, gratuities and/or corruption, and other challenges facing law enforcement. Students need to be prepared to address real life issues.

Special Topics:

Rules of Engagement for the Suicide Bomber
If we believe that the fight against terrorism in the form of suicide bombers only exists outside the bounds of the continental United States…we are mistaken.  Terrorism in this vehicle has already arrived. Our fight begins with our local, state and federal law enforcement officers, in identifying and dismantling terrorist sleeper cells living among us. Most of these covert operations are partially supported by the proceeds derived from the sale of narcotics and other illegal crimes. This presentation will identify the flow of monies into these domestic terrorist organizations and offer methods of detection.  Our laws and perception of the rules of engagement must be understood and affected.  We must be prepared to stand up to this challenge.

Preventing Terrorist Suicide Attacks

Law enforcement officers will be able learn methods of disrupting the planning, preparation, and execution of Islamist terrorist suicide attacks within the United States.  The course objective goes beyond mere post-blast reaction to an incident that has already occurred; participants will acquire the knowledge and skills for the pro-active prevention and defeat of the suicide terrorist threat.  This objective is based on the premise that in the course of their daily work, law enforcement officers are very likely to encounter Islamist terrorists and potential suicide bombers that are present in the U.S.  If these officers possess the appropriate skills and knowledge, they can be an invaluable tool in the domestic war on terror.   The course also gives officers the basic knowledge to identify sleeper cells funding terrorism through narcotics and other crimes, and in addition survive and defeat a suicide bombing in-progress, to include engagement criteria and the use of deadly force.

Improvised Explosive Devices

The Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) recognition class is an 8-hour program.  Primarily didactic in nature, the course contains open-source footage and illustrations of various IEDs and their components.  The evolution of IEDs from the “primitive” to the “contemporary” will be compared. Current day examples of circuit components and detonation devices will be examined.

Teambuilding

Teambuilding is more than several individuals working together; it is a synergist endeavor where great things can be accomplished. The team involves many unique individuals at different levels of skills, abilities, and motivation. This course will address the dysfunctions of a team: absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of communication, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. Through the true dynamics of teamwork a taskforce or even an organization is a place of accomplishing far more than any one person could even do alone.

Time Management

Time is something that we all have, but it is limited. This is not a course on how to make lists or even prioritize your daily obligations, because time management is life management. This course is about how to live, how to say no, how to understand and focus on core values: personal and organizational. The reality is we only have so much time in a day, a week, a month, or even a life, so how do you want to spend it. This course is a skill building class and you will learn how to manage your time, rather than being managed by it. This is one of the critical differences in becoming a leader.

Change Management

Change, even little change, can be a great stress to any individual or within an organization. Change can be very difficult, but even more difficult is to manage the changes of others. This course is about the impact of change and how to address issues and minimize the impact of those in the organization through communication, trust building, and understanding the different stages of stress management or grief. Little things don’t mean a lot; they mean everything to those going through this challenge. This course will greatly assist managers, supervisions, and leaders in accomplishing things through, not in spite of, people. Failing to address this change can be the one factor that becomes the bottleneck in you accomplishing results.

Conflict Negotiations

Everything in life and within an organization is a series of negotiations or conflict resolutions. This class is more of a class of survival for anyone who is a supervisor or leader. You need to lead through people, but leadership is accomplishing results. This course develops the leader’s skills in resolving real life issues and how to solve problems. Anyone who has been in a position of management knows the enormous amount of time you will spend on solving people problems again and again. This course is designed to help the supervisor in addressing issues and solving problems through negotiations skills.
